Do your auto insurance and registration address have to match?

Car insurance and registration address need to match in most states. You'll have a grace period after moving to a new address, but you should update your address as soon as possible. Part of this is because auto insurance rates vary wildly by location, including $656.95/year for full coverage in ID and $1,353.96/ year for full coverage in NJ. Lying about your address to get cheaper insurance is considered insurance fraud.

A Concise Overview:

  • It’s always best — and usually required — to have the same physical address listed for your driver’s license, registration, and auto insurance policy.
  • ZIP codes and cities play a role in how much your auto insurance will be — high crime rates result in higher insurance rates.

Do your car insurance and registration address have to match?

Do my car insurance and registration address have to be the same? Can your car be registered at a different address than your auto insurance? Do registration and insurance have to match in NJ, CA, or other states?

You must register your vehicle at your physical address. The New York State DMV notes that you must change your address to match. If it does not, you can be fined, and your auto insurance claim can be denied.

Does my car insurance address have to match my license?

Can your car insurance address be different from your home address? Unless you’re a student borrowing your parents’ car while you’re at school, your home address must be on your auto insurance policy.

If these addresses do not match, your auto insurer would be within its rights to deny any claims you may have. Why is that?

Take a look at the table below which shows average rates for auto insurance for each state in the country.

As you can see, average rates in Idaho are $656.95 per year while average rates in New Jersey are $1,353.96 per year. That’s twice as much. And rates don’t just vary by state. They can often vary a lot by ZIP code within the same city.

That’s because auto insurance companies calculate your rates partly based on your address. If you live in a high-crime area with a lot of vandalism or thefts, rest assured your rates will be much higher than your colleague in the safer suburbs.

The cities with the highest vehicle theft rates are generally the ones with the highest auto insurance rates also.

If you lie about where you live to get cheaper auto insurance, that’s a type of auto insurance fraud. This video from Shouse Law Group goes over this and other forms of auto insurance fraud.

This is taken very seriously, and it’s best to get everything registered in the correct address quickly after moving.

One exception to these addresses matching is if you don’t actually own a vehicle yourself. Then, you may be able to get non-owners car insurance to cover accidents while you’re driving someone else’s vehicle.

Do my driver’s license and registration have to match?

Does the address on your car title matter? Does your driver’s license have to match your license plates?

The short answer is: yes. When you move to a new address, you’ll have a grace period. The time for that varies, but you’re required to update your license, registration, and auto insurance addresses.

Can a vehicle be registered in one state and insured in another?

Can you register a car to a P.O. box in Illinois but have car insurance in Indiana? Once again, the answer is no. You have to match your vehicle registration and auto insurance address. Sometimes this comes up with snowbirds who fly south for the winter.

If you have two houses, you’ll have to match the addresses for your registration and insurance, but that doesn’t mean you have to actually be in that state all the time.

Does your car insurance and registration have to be under the same name?

Your auto insurance needs to be under the same name as your registration. If you’re financing, the title might be under the lender’s name, but your registration must be under yours.

However, you can have more than one name on either. And if you’re a parent adding a child to your auto insurance policy, that is common practice and a great way to save money.

Can you insure a car that is not registered to you?

Is car insurance tied to the registration? Most of the time, you won’t be able to get auto insurance on a car that’s not registered to you.

There may be some exceptions, but it will likely be difficult to find an insurer that will do this.
