State Farm Insurance Rates

How much is State Farm car insurance?

State Farm is one of the cheapest car insurance companies in the industry, with an average annual rate of $1,267 — $275 lower than the national average.

To see how insurance rates vary across the country, take a look at at the map below.

However, keep in mind that several factors come into play when deciding your car insurance rates. Everything from your coverage type to your age to your driving history will play a role in how insurance companies set your rates.

We go into more detail in the sections below about how much you can expect to pay for insurance, depending on your unique situation.

How much is minimum coverage with State Farm?

Almost all states require drivers to carry a minimum liability coverage, and some require personal injury protection, medical payments, and/or uninsured motorist insurance.

Liability insurance does not cover your vehicle, but it pays for other drivers’ damages in an accident you cause.

Currently, State Farm has the third-lowest minimum coverage rates, falling behind only GEICO and USAA. Take a look at the table below to compare GEICO liability rates with those of other top insurance competitors.

State Farm’s minimum liability insurance is $1,191 per year on average, with the national average being $1,463. That’s an annual savings of over $260.

How much is full coverage with State Farm?

Full coverage insurance will typically cost you more, but it also covers more. Full coverage insurance includes not only liability coverage but also collision and comprehensive.

State Farm has the fourth-lowest average rates for drivers with full coverage at $1,348 annually. The table below shows how State Farm stacks up against other top insurance companies.

State Farm’s rates are nearly 17% lower than the national average of $1,621.

How much is State Farm insurance for teen drivers?

One of the most significant factors that influence rates is age, and adding a teenager to your policy can cause your premium to skyrocket. However, State Farm is a great choice for young drivers and has some of the best rates for parents adding a teen to their policy.

State Farm has the lowest rate increase among its top competitors for teen drivers, but the rates will always be highest for these young, inexperienced drivers.

This table shows how State Farm beats out the competition when it comes to teenage drivers.

The average rate for guardians adding a teen driver to their State Farm policy is $1,003 per year. This is substantially lower than even GEICO’s $1,958 — a nearly $1,000 difference.

How much is State Farm insurance for young adults?

State Farm has relatively low rates for drivers between the ages of 18 to 25.

On average, drivers will see their rates gradually decrease until reaching 25 years old, and then rates start to level off. This is because younger drivers tend to have more accidents even after exiting their teenage years.

State Farm’s rates for young adults are still below the national average at $2,407 per year. Below are the rates for young adult drivers with State Farm compared to rates from other insurers.

On average, GEICO is another affordable option at $1,783 per year for young adult drivers.

How much is State Farm insurance for senior drivers?

Most drivers will see their rates stay relatively consistent through their 30s, 40s, and 50s. When drivers reach age 65, they may notice their rates going back up.

State Farm offers relatively good rates for senior drivers at an annual average of $1,423. Below we compare this with top competitors in the industry.

Again, GEICO also provides some of the lowest rates for senior drivers at $1,197 per year.

Both State Farm and GEICO offer some of the most affordable car insurance rates to drivers of all ages.

How does your driving history affect your State Farm rates?

Your driving history is an essential factor in determining your auto insurance rates. Drivers should always expect their rates to increase after an accident or traffic ticket.

Good news: these drivers with a not-so-perfect driving record might find some of the cheapest insurance quotes with State Farm. State Farm offers the second-cheapest insurance rates for drivers who have a speeding ticket on their record at $1,607 annually.

This table shows how State Farm ranks with its competitors in regards to single traffic ticket rates.

Drivers with a DUI on their record will see the largest increase in auto insurance rates.

Again, State Farm has the cheapest rates for these high-risk drivers. State Farm drivers with a DUI on their record pay an average of $1,942 per year. This easily beats out the second-lowest insurer for DUIs, Progressive, by nearly $500.

Even though State Farm ranks top in many national averages for risky drivers, remember to always compare quotes from multiple insurers. Just because an insurer ranks first on a national level does not mean it’s the best choice in your state or for your unique needs.

How does your credit history affect your State Farm rates?

In contrast to State Farm’s cheap rates for drivers with less-than-stellar driving history, its rates for drivers with poor credit are the highest among the top insurance companies.

Insurers take credit scores into consideration when determining rates because there is a statistical link between good credit and good drivers. Drivers with good credit are less likely to file claims, according to most insurers.

State Farm has the highest rates on our list for drivers with poor credit histories.

Also, not all states allow insurance companies to use credit history when determining rates. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan have passed laws banning this practice.

With so many factors affecting how each insurance company creates its own rates, getting at least three insurance quotes from different companies is always recommended to find the best fit for your needs. That way you can compare State Farm auto quotes against others to ensure you’re getting the best price.

What is State Farm’s Steer Clear Program?

Another opportunity for young drivers to save with State Farm is by taking advantage of the company’s Steer Clear app.

Drivers under 25 years of age with no at-fault accidents for the past three years are eligible to participate in the State Farm Steer Clear program. This app provides five training modules that consist of driving scenarios, lessons, and quizzes for the driver to complete within six months.

After completing this program, young drivers may be eligible for additional discounts — which is crucial since rates are highest for young, inexperienced drivers.

Shocked at service

Just shocked! Been with the company for 12+ years, hit something in my yard, filed a claim, and have yet to hear from a claim agent. I had to reach out myself and did the estimate picture assessment, which was supposed to be 24 to 48 hours, but haven't heard from anyone. Been four days, lack of concern for the customer, I guess that don't have the proper staff, not sure, guessing here. Nothing like what they used to be.

Second, State Farm gave me a replacement value that was wrong and lied about pre-existing damage. They gave me a valuation that didn't include the options my car had and claimed I had extensive pre-existing damage which was absolutely not true - even to the point where they said I had bare tires and I have proof they were new! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take photos of all of the condition points of the car before it was sent to the shop so I had no way to contest the condition valuation. Cut the amount I received in half. Horrible company would not recommend at all. All the reviews on here are people without problems. The real reviews come up when you have real problems. I had a totaled car and I can say without a doubt State Farm was anything but helpful. In fact, they showed me they could care less about what happened and did everything possible not to pay out the actual value of my car (including by lying about pre-existing conditions).

State Farm will prolong claims as long as possible.

I was in a accident with one of their insured drivers, he had no license, and was driving his mom's car. It's been a month and a half my truck is not drivable, and haven't heard anything back from them. Tried calling and they say be patient.. but coming on 2months with no vehicle is patient enough to me, especially when the other driver had no license and was at fault.

State Farm is a rip off

Been with State Farm for awhile and things were great until recently in the last few months. I drive an older truck and I feel at ease knowing I have roadside assistance if i need it. Anyway I received a letter from State Farm saying they were discontinuing my roadside assistance because i had too many claims and there were 4 dates listed of these claims. When reading this I was confused, because I only had my truck towed 2 times and also a tire change. After being on the phone 45 minutes with the claims department trying to figure this out, I was told i was in the right. They would take care of it for me. Called my agent a few days ago and she is telling me roadside is still not covered and the price even went up. I argued with her telling her it was suppose to be taken care of and she said she would get back with me...never called me back. Oh and she also said now i had 6 claims??? I asked her about the dates and why I didn't have a letter regarding the now 6 dates of claims ( this is all a lie btw ) Real professional huh? Now looking for another company.

Where do I start. I have been a state farm customer over a decade . Several months ago in the middle of winter, my truck died and would not start. I called roadside assistance immediately, they said help would be on the way. My son and I waited for 18 hours before a tow truck came! Absolutely unacceptable and wrong! Lucky we had family near and were able to go get warm and safe before we died of exposure. Than 3 weeks ago my car was hit badly going through a road construction area. They still don't want to fix my vehicle and told me to go to one of their "preferred locations " I did. The man taking the estimate gave legal advice without a license and told me state farm would not be covering the damages! This was from the body shop! Smh. I went to a reputable body shop and the estimate was well over double the first cost to fix the vehicle properly! They still won't pay, call me back or try to fix anything, but yet they take money out of my account the same day every month. My advice? Run, do not walk from state farm! It's criminal what they put customers through. Still no resolution.

Was in an accident last month which led to my car being totaled and their service was terrible. Extremely poor communication between customer service reps, had to call in multiple times and repeat myself. They towed my car to the salvage yard with all my personal belongings still in it without my authorization and then asked me to get them myself when I was without a car. Called them multiple times and spoke to different reps who all gave me a different story. Some said it would be mailed to me, a month later, still haven't gotten my stuff bag and calling again they said they wouldn't send it since there are no notes on my claim ever stating they were going to send it in the first place. Absolutely ridiculous to expect me to drive 40 minutes one way to get my things back when I don't have a car for their mistake. No remorse or compensation from any of the reps I spoke to - just really bad attitude and service. I have renters insurance through them as well but seeing as how they act after you file a claim I will be switching to a different provider. Been a customer for over 5 years - not that they care about loyalty.
