What are the best auto insurance companies for Air Force airmen overall?

The following companies are notably supportive of active-duty members, reservists, and veterans of the U.S. military: USAA, GEICO, and Progressive/Armed Forces Insurance. All these companies offer generous discounts to all members, as well as special discounts for the military.

USAA

USAA (United Services Automobile Association) USAA caters exclusively to the United States military community. To join USAA, you must be on active duty, on reserve, or a military veteran. Your spouse, children, and grandchildren may also become members.

USAA currently works with 10 Air Force-affiliated organizations, including the Air Force Association, to make sure that Air Force personnel are aware of the benefits that await them after becoming USAA members.

After joining USAA, you can enjoy some of the lowest car insurance rates in the country and numerous discounts. USAA claims to save customers between $701-$725 a year on auto insurance. USAA also offers at least 12 discounts on its auto insurance, including:

  • Drive safely or take an approved defensive driving course to receive discounts. Your teens can save you money too by completing basic driver training and maintaining good grades.
  • USAA offers discounts for low mileage during the year, cars that are three years old or newer, and insuring multiple cars. You can also save up to 60% if you store your car in a secure location, but the discount is not available in Hawaii, North Carolina, or Virginia.
  • There are at least three membership discounts. You can save up to 10% if your parents were USAA members and if you are a longtime member. You can also save up to 15% on your comprehensive coverage when you leave your vehicle in a garage on base.

Additionally, you can enjoy up to a 60% reduction of your USAA car insurance rates during deployment.

GEICO

GEICO is USAA’s top competitor in terms of its dedication to U.S. military veterans. It employs a team of vets as part of its unique spin on customer service.

GEICO also offers a 15% discount to military personnel who are active duty, retired, in the Reserves, or part of the National Guard. GEICO usually offers lower rates, so Air Force airmen can save even more.

Like USAA, GEICO offers veterans a discount of up to 15% if those veterans leave their covered vehicles on base. However, the discount only applies if those vehicles are in secure locations in eligible states.

Still, GEICO allows deployed veterans to pause or suspend their insurance if they store their cars on base for 30 days or longer.

Progressive/Armed Forces Insurance

Progressive is a favorite of many customers because it is transparent about its rates and those of its competitors. But military personnel may also like Progressive because it works with Armed Forces Insurance to provide military personnel with coverage.

AFI is another company that exclusively offers car insurance for armed forces personnel, their spouses, and their dependents, but it has an even smaller reach than USAA. AFI does business in 38 states; it writes policies in only 10 states and works through Progressive in the other 28.

Among the discounts that AFI offers is a multi-policy discount and multi-vehicle discount. And like USAA and GEICO, AFI offers a 15% discount on comprehensive car insurance coverage for veterans who leave their cars in a garage at a military base.

Do other auto insurance companies offer discounts and support for Air Force personnel?

If you are an Air Force airman, some other companies that you may want to consider are Allstate/Esurance, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, and Nationwide.

Allstate/Esurance

Allstate may offer discounts to military personnel, but the amount of savings for Air Force airmen is unclear. However, Allstate offers a plethora of discounts for its members and high-rated service. Allstate also supports military veterans in multiple ways.

For one thing, the company is part of the Veteran Jobs Mission Coalition and seeks to hire retired military members. Also, the Allstate Veteran Engagement Team & Supporters program promotes interaction and collaboration among its military vets’ families.

Additionally, Allstate owns Esurance. The latter company provides temporary car insurance coverage for military vets who need to change or reinstate their insurance.

Farmers

Farmers is a “military friendly” employer. The company actively hires military veterans. Farmers has a Veterans and Advocates program to make veterans’ transition to the company easier. The company also boasts that one in four of its agents is a military veteran.

Farmers does have a military discount. You may be able to save up to 10%. The company’s military discount depends on your state and the coverages you choose. Besides the military discount, you may save by bundling insurance or finding other discounts that apply in your state.

Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual may offer a military discount of up to 10%, but that may depend on your location and the types of coverage you have. Some notable discounts include:

  • Multi-policy discount: You can save hundreds of dollars each year if you bundle home and auto insurance with Liberty Mutual.
  • Pay-in-full discount: You can save by paying for your policy in just one or two payments each year.
  • Right-Track: This is a safe-driving discount that can save you up to 30% each year.

Liberty Mutual also offers at least 17 types of discounts on its car insurance, but the above may offer the greatest amount of savings for your situation.

Nationwide

Nationwide offers a military discount for active-duty military personnel and veterans. You will need to talk to an agent to see if the military discount is available in your state and determine what type of policy you need to take advantage of it.

Besides the military discount, you can save with Nationwide in a variety of ways, including:

  • Nationwide’s Safe Driver discount: If you go five years without an accident, you can dramatically lower your yearly rates.
  • The SmartMiles program: If you drive no more than 500 miles per month, you may save up to 10% on your car insurance. However, this discount is available in only 39 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Having multiple policies: If you bundle home and car insurance with Nationwide, you may be able to save up to $646 a year.

Nationwide offers at least nine auto insurance discounts, and the above are among the best.

Which company should you buy Air Force auto insurance from?

Ultimately, there are a few factors that you must weigh when choosing an Air Force car insurance company. These factors include the cost and quality of coverage, as well as customer service and financial rankings. In those areas, USAA and GEICO consistently receive high ratings.

USAA is a Fortune 500 company with strong finances. In 2020, USAA was worth about $40.4 billion. It has managed to give $3.1 billion back to customers so far.

  • USAA’s current A.M. Best rating is A++ (Superior), the highest of 16 ratings.
  • Moody’s Investor Service gave USAA an Aaa (Exceptional) rating, the highest of 21 possible ratings.
  • Standard & Poor’s gave USAA an AA+ (Very Strong) rating, S&P’s second-highest rating.

GEICO isn’t far behind. It is also a Fortune 500 company, with assets that total over $32 billion. For its financial strength, GEICO received an A++ rating from A.M. Best and an A++ rating from S&P.

According to the 2020 J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Index study, both GEICO and USAA received consistently high ratings. USAA received no less than 876 out of 1,000 points in any region, and GEICO ranked first in the Northwest and Northcentral regions.
